Berlin Marathon Course Nutrition & PR Strategy Breakdown

  • • Gel Station Location: Only provided at km 27.5.
  • • Drinks Stations: Located every 5 km up to km 20, then every 2.5–3 km to the finish.
  • • Drinks Provided: Water, warm tea, and Maurten carbohydrate drink at select stations.

The "27.5km Maurten Gap" Trap

Because the official Maurten gel handout is located at km 27.5 (over 17 miles into the race), relying on race organizers for fuel is a recipe for failure. If you don't carry personal fuel from the start, you will deplete liver and muscle glycogen long before reaching the Maurten tables.

The Flat Cadence Trap Through Tiergarten

Berlin has virtually no hills, meaning your stride pattern and muscle load never change. Leaving Straße des 17. Juni, runners frequently lock into a rhythm 5–10 seconds too fast because the wide roads feel effortless. This extra pace burns high amounts of glucose per minute. Taking your first gel around minute 25 preserves your glycogen reserves for the tough, long straightaways along Kurfürstendamm (km 33–37).

Station Management & Cup Etiquette

Berlin uses plastic and paper cups rather than bottles or pouches. Grabbing open cups while running at pace leads to spilling half the contents and choking on water. Squeeze the rim of the cup into a funnel to drink cleanly, or carry a 500ml soft flask in your shorts pockets so you can drink smoothly between stations without breaking cadence.
