Base Volume Re-entry: Establish aerobic cadence with controlled easy volume and light strides.

Backyard ultras require muscular durability over aerobic threshold. Never race the clock on a yard—finish with 10–12 minutes in the corral every hour.

⚡ Ultra-Cushion & Swelling Rotation

The Backyard Ultra 4-Shoe Quiver

Rigid carbon racers bottom out and smash toenails after 8 hours. A successful 24-hour campaign requires max-cushion hybrids, foot-swelling width, and joint-protective rockers.

The 3 Rules of Surviving 24+ Hours (100 Miles)

How discipline in the first 6 hours dictates whether you survive the dark yards of the night.

Rule 1 • Pacing Patience

The 48-to-50 Minute Yard Ceiling

Running a 40-minute yard to get "20 minutes of rest" is suicide. Running fast burns glycogen, creates muscular micro-tears, and cools your body down too much in the chair. Run 48–51 minutes: walk all inclines, jog flat roads, and protect your legs.

Rule 2 • Corral 10-Min Clock

The 10-Minute Turnaround Protocol

Every minute in camp must be scripted. Minute 1–3: Sit, shoes unlaced, feet elevated. Minute 4–6: Real food intake (broth, rice cakes, potatoes) + 200ml fluid. Minute 7–8: Lube, socks, headlamp check. Minute 9: Stand up and walk into the 3-minute whistle corral.

Rule 3 • Circadian Yards 12–18

Surviving the 2 AM to 5 AM Wall

When core body temperature drops and circadian sleep pressure peaks, your brain will scream to quit. Switch to high-lumen lighting, consume warm bone broth or salty ramen, and lock into step with a trusted runner until dawn breaks.
