Valencia Marathon Course Nutrition & PB Strategy Breakdown
On-Course Nutrition Setup
- • Gel Partner: Enervit Gels (~18g to 20g carbohydrates per sachet).
- • Gel Stations: Distributed only twice along the entire 42.2 km course (approx. km 19 and km 29).
- • Liquid Refreshments: 33cl bottled water and Powerade cups available every 5 km.
- • Elevation: Less than 40m total gain—one of the fastest four marathons in the world.
The "13km Enervit Drought" Trap
Enervit gel distribution ends around km 29. That means the entire closing 13.2 km (over 8 miles) of the race has zero gel handouts. If you do not carry your own gels, you will hit glycogen depletion as you enter the exposed avenues between km 35 and 38.
The Flat Cadence & Constant Muscle Loading
Unlike undulating courses where downhills provide micro-recovery for running musculature, Valencia is relentless. The course is dead flat from start to finish. Your stride frequency and muscle loading remain identical for thousands of consecutive strides. Maintaining consistent sodium and fluid intake is essential to prevent sudden neuromuscular cramping in your hamstrings and calves during the final 7 kilometers.
Managing Midday Temperature Rise
While Valencia starts around 10–12°C at 8:15 AM, clear skies and bright Mediterranean sunshine frequently push temperatures to 18–21°C by 11:30 AM. Runners who dress for winter running overheat. Utilize the 33cl water bottles at every 5km station to take steady sips and pour water over your neck and wrists to manage core temperature.
