The "Hopkinton Downhill" Trap
The first 4 miles drop over 300 vertical feet. Runners frequently clock splits 20 seconds too fast, loading their quadriceps with eccentric damage. This burns finite liver glycogen prematurely. Taking your first gel by minute 20 is essential to cushion your muscle cells before the climbing starts.
Fueling the Newton Hills (Miles 16–21)
The Newton Hills consist of four distinct climbs beginning after the Commonwealth Avenue turn in Newton Lower Falls. The final crest—Heartbreak Hill—peaks at Mile 20.5. If your circulating blood carbohydrate drops here, muscular glycogen depleted legs will seize instantly on the incline. Take an energy gel with 150ml of fluid at Mile 15.5 before the first climb, and another at Mile 19 to keep blood glucose primed.
Surviving the Post-Heartbreak Downhill into Boston
After summiting Heartbreak Hill, the final 5 miles drop steeply into Brookline and Boston. Runners whose glycogen stores are depleted cannot withstand the quad-smashing downhill impact. Carry electrolyte chewables to prevent calf and quad cramps as you turn "Right on Hereford, Left on Boylston."
