Paris Marathon Course Nutrition & Elevation Strategy Breakdown

On-Course Nutrition Setup

  • • Gel Partner: Isostar Energy Gels.
  • • Official Gel Handout: Designated station at km 30 only along the Seine.
  • • Refreshment Format: 5 km tables offering small individual water bottles, bananas, oranges, and sugar cubes.
  • • Course Profile: Rolling elevation profile with ~170m total gain, concentrated in the river tunnels and Bois de Boulogne.

The "Seine Tunnel Roller Coaster" Trap

Between km 25 and 30, the course plunges into multiple underground vehicular underpasses. Each dip breaks your cadence, and the steep exit ramps require heavy quadricep recruitment. Taking an energy gel at km 24 before entering the tunnels protects blood sugar and prevents cramping on the climbs.

Champs-Élysées Downhill & Navigating Cobblestones

The opening mile drops straight down the wide cobblestones of the Champs-Élysées. The uneven surface magnifies joint impact while the excitement of Paris tempts runners into starting 20 seconds too fast. Settle into a rhythm, look for smoother pavement along the gutters if needed, and initiate your fueling plan by minute 20.

Surviving the Bois de Boulogne into Avenue Foch (km 34–42)

After passing the Eiffel Tower and Roland Garros, the final 8 km wind through the winding paths of the Bois de Boulogne. The lack of dense city crowds and subtle rolling hills can be mentally testing. Taking a final gel at km 35 provides the circulating glucose needed to emerge from the woods and sprint down the wide expanse of Avenue Foch.
