Chicago Marathon Course Nutrition & PR Strategy Breakdown

On-Course Nutrition Setup

  • • Gel Partner: Maurten Gel 100 & Gel 100 CAF 100 (25g carbs/gel).
  • • Official Gel Zones: Located at Mile 13.6 and Mile 18.2.
  • • Hydration Tables: 20 aid stations serving Gatorade Endurance (first tables) and water (second tables).
  • • Course Profile: Exceptionally flat course through 29 neighborhoods with a total elevation gain under 30 meters.

The "Flat Cadence Lock" Trap

Because Chicago has no downhills or climbs to alter your stride mechanics, your hip flexors, calves, and quads fire at the identical angle for over 30,000 steps. Neuromuscular fatigue strikes quickly if blood sodium and glycogen drop. Take regular salt chewables and fuel at 25-minute intervals.

Navigating Crowds & Paper Cup Tables

With over 45,000 runners, aid stations in the first 10 miles are dense. Chicago sets up long tables on both sides of the street: Gatorade Endurance cups always appear first, followed by water. Move toward the far end of the tables rather than lunging for the first volunteers to maintain momentum and avoid collisions.

Conquering "Mount Roosevelt" (Mile 26)

After winding north from Chinatown through Michigan Avenue, runners turn right onto Roosevelt Road at Mile 26. This overpass is the only uphill on the course, but on depleted legs, it feels like a wall. Taking your final gel around Mile 23 ensures active circulating glucose to power up the ramp, turn left onto Columbus Drive, and sprint to the finish.
